Boaters Checklist & River Etiquette

Boater’s Checklist:

  • Food & Water
  • Spare Paddle
  • Map
  • Sunscreen
  • First Aid Kit
  • Whistle or Signaling Device
  • Duct Tape/Boat Repair Kit
  • Bilge Pump or Bailer
  • Extra Clothing in a Dry Bag
  • File a Float Plan with Family, Friends, or Neighbors

River Etiquette

  • Always dispose of waste and trash properly
  • Please no glass containers – for your safety and that of others
  • Respect private property – no trespassing
  • Be courteous to others
  • Be mindful of anglers and other river users
  • Control pets of leave them at home
  • Sound travels on the water – please keep yours to a minimum
  • Respect wildlife – the outdoors is their home

Safety & Emergency Tips

  • Wear Your Life Jacket at all Times!
  • Protect your feet
  • Watch and Avoid Strainers (Avoid downed trees and other debris along the shore)
  • Know the River
  • Know Your Boat (Understand how to operate your canoe, kayak, paddleboard, or motorized vessel)
  • In the event of an emergency, call 911 or the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office at 706-672-3809. If possible, advise them of your location on the river.
